Course Information
Yes, this course comes with a lecture. There's even note-taking involved. However, almost no other course at UMass will offer the insight into management practices for small ruminants that this one does. Students learn how to give vaccinations and utilize anthelmintics. They will also act as managers of the herd, deciding as a group which animals will stay as breeding animals and which will be sold. Perhaps most importantly, students gain experience handling livestock by practicing basic skills such as haltering, tying slipknots, and forming catching pens. Between weighing, hooftrimming, and ultrasounding, Mondays are always a busy night down at the barn.
Required dress: separate barn clothes or coveralls and rubber boots. Footwear and clothes for class should not be worn to other farms. Class meets Mondays at 7 p.m. at Hadley Livestock Barn. If you are in need of a ride, we leave from behind Stockbridge Hall at 6:45 p.m.
*First meeting of every semester meets in Stockbridge 318. Come prepared with rubber boots and barn clothes if you wish to visit the barn after.
